NEW!  Introduction to Studio Lighting

  • April 2023 date Postponed - new date TBD

This loosely structured class will help you to get a handle on the basics of studio lighting. Although we will concentrate on portrait lighting, the principles apply to any subject.

We'll cover these topics (as time permits):

  • How to create a beautiful portrait with just one light, or several.

  • What camera settings to use.

  • Learn where you should place your main light.

  • Learn how and when to use soft boxes, umbrellas, and other modifiers.

  • Learn what creates "hard" or "soft" light, and which to choose.

  • How to use a light meter, and why you should have one.

  • Recommendations for studio lighting on a budget.

  • How to get the proper color.

  • Live model! (Subject to availability)

It can take years of practice and training to learn good studio lighting, but this 2 hour class will get you on track!

Prerequisites:

  • DSLR or other interchangeable lens camera recommended - must have manual settings.

  • You should have a basic understanding of the Exposure Triangle (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO) and how to change those settings.

  • Our DSLR Basics class is recommended before taking this one

  • Limited to just 8 photographers, ages 16 and up!

Due to the small size of our classes and the planning that goes into them, we cannot issue refunds for missed classes. If we have a waitlist, we'll happily issue a refund if we fill your spot.

Annapolis Morning Light Workshop

  • TBD

This photo walk workshop will make you more creative!

(Limited to 10 photographers!)

  • The best time of day in Annapolis is early morning. I especially love a nice Sunday morning...the town is just awakening for another beautiful day, and the hoards of tourists are still sleeping in from their late night out.  On a clear day, the sun creates a warm glow that's perfect for getting great shots all around the City Dock and the Downtown area.  An overcast day can offer some great "moody" shots of boats, historic homes and buildings, ducks, sculptures, and more.  There's an endless variety of great things to photograph!

  • We'll do a quick review of basic camera settings, if needed (Shutter speed, Aperture, white balance, and more).

  • We'll discuss the Rule of Thirds and other composition tips to help make your subjects stand out.

  • I'll show you how to "see the light".

  • You'll see how different lens focal lengths give your photos different looks.

  • Camera setting assignments:  I'll give you some specific assignments using various shutter speeds and apertures to see how they give your images different looks.

  • Creative Assignments:  I'll give each of you a list of assignments that will help you understand how to get more creative shots that have a real impact.  (Later, you'll have the opportunity to post your best images to an online gallery...if you want.)

  • Then, after a couple of hours we'll polish off all of this fun by having breakfast at an iconic Annapolis eatery!  (Optional, for those who can stay.)

Due to the small size of our classes and the planning that goes into them, we cannot issue refunds for missed classes. If we have a waitlist, we'll happily issue a refund if we fill your spot.

  • April 19-25, 2020 (Havana / Vinales) < POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19

  • November 7-16, 2020 (Havana / Vinales / Trinidad)  < POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19

Covid and the US Embargo have made things very difficult for the Cuban people.  The situation there is slowly getting back to normal, but even "normal" can be challenging for Cubans.  We still hope to schedule trips for 2023, but we need to firm up some new connections first. Let us know if you are interested and we'll keep you notified.

Come with us on a Legal trip to Cuba!

  • All Cuba trips are led by David Anderson, Cr. Photog. CPP, and can include as much – or as little – photo instruction as you want. Dave has friends and contacts in Cuba who will make your trip GREAT!

  • All trips are very limited in size – most will have no more than 4 – 6 people.

  • Our travel is authorized by the general OFAC license.§ 515.574 Support for the Cuban People. Staying in private homes and eating at private restaurants is required, plus you will be asked to bring an extra bag with supplies that our Cuban families and friends need (Dave will make suggestions before your trip.).

  • Cuba is changing in many ways – some good, and some not so good. WiFi and Internet were introduced in 2015 and can now be accessed (for a small fee) in some public places. Although Cuba is renovating many historic buildings, many more are rapidly deteriorating. Havana is said to be losing about 300 buildings per year due to decay and collapse, so it changes nearly every day.

  • The U.S.continues to add new restrictions, so we don’t know how long Americans will be allowed to travel to Cuba.  Contact Dave to book your trip soon!

  • Fees vary depending on the dates and destinations we go to in Cuba, but usually range from $1800 - 2400 including accommodations, breakfast daily, all ground transportation, and more!

NOTE:  Our January, March, and April 2020 trips are already booked up.  We may schedule another for late March or mid-May, and of course, later in the year.  (Let us know dates that work for you!)
